Elise Keaton: Support our children's health

Posted June 22, 2007

To the Editor:

Recently, Governor Ritter signed a bill (SB 211) that will make it easier to enroll low-income kids in the Child Health Plan Plus, the state/federal health insurance plan for kids whose families make too much money to qualify for Medicaid but can’t afford private insurance.

That’s a great thing, but a double-edged sword if the federal government does not expand funding for the program. Without additional federal money, Colorado will face shortfalls in just a few years that will make it harder for us to continue covering the kids already in the program, let alone any new children who are enrolled.

This summer, our senators and representatives will have the chance to vote on expanded funding for the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. I urge all of them to vote “yes,” and invest in Colorado’s kids.

Sincerely,

Elise Keaton
